2026 is Poised to Be Declared the Year of the Croaking Craze.

While I found the recent developer-focused presentation was a delight to watch, my primary conclusion was perhaps unexpected: I am convinced that 2026 will be the peak period for frogs in video games.

Exactly five of the featured titles—Frog Sqwad, Stretchmancer, Unshine Arcade, Awaysis, and Big Hops—in some way feature these hoppy characters. Considering a collection of frogs is known as an army, it seems they are taking over the industry.

From Classic Icons to Modern Mania

Croaking characters are anything but new to the world of games. Looking back at titles like Frogger to the iconic froggy chair in Animal Crossing, they have consistently maintained a niche presence. However, their prevalence has noticeably surged in recent times.

A simple search for "frog game" on Steam unveils an overwhelming flood of results. Although, some of these are novelty titles, a great many are legitimate titles centered on frogs.

Tracking the Tadpole Trend

To understand this trend, I undertook a thorough analysis into the last half-decade of frog-related gaming on Steam. My methodology was based on clear indicators, prioritizing games with frogs in the title or clearly visible in screenshots.

The findings paint a clear picture: a steady rise from less than 20 titles in 2020 to close to 60 in 2025.

This significant surge prompts the question: why the sudden leap? The frog's elevated place in the broader culture is also apparent elsewhere, for example the revival of Frog and Toad as beloved characters. But, the wave in gaming seems uniquely powerful.

Why Frogs? The Game Design Advantage

Frankly, this is a trend I can wholeheartedly support. Frogs offer built-in creative potential for game developers.

  • Unique Characters: They are ideally shaped to be designed as memorable characters that often become a standout feature in any game.
  • Unique Gameplay: Their long tongues and prehensile tongues lend themselves to a wide array of innovative control schemes.

Several the featured titles clearly utilize these traits. Take the tongue-swinging in Big Hops and the extra-long limb puzzles of Stretchmancer.

What the Future Holds

So, what is the outlook for 2026? With five frog games already announced before the year has even begun—and the potential for more—the trajectory is clear for it to be the biggest year for amphibian gaming.

When these games perform well—and based on past trends, games from this showcase often do—we may indeed be witnessing a genuine frog gaming renaissance.
