Alphabet Plans Investment of $15bn for Constructing AI Computing Facility in India

AI Data Center
India is a key destination for data centres due to its affordable data rates and quickly expanding internet user base.

Google's parent company the Alphabet conglomerate is set to invest $15 billion to build an AI data hub in the state of Andhra Pradesh in southern India.

The infrastructure, that is planned in the coastal city of the city of Visakhapatnam, is set to become a component of Google's international system of AI centers distributed over twelve different countries.

"It stands as the greatest AI hub that we are going to be investing in anywhere in the world, excluding the US," Thomas Kurien stated at an event in the capital city of Delhi recently, mentioning that the investment will be spread over the next five years.

This declaration comes at a time American President Donald Trump has been encouraging companies from the United States to focus on domestic investment.

India's Increasing Significance in AI Computing

The country has risen as a key destination for AI data centres. The country's affordable data pricing and rapidly growing online population have established it as a hub for expansion of cloud and artificial intelligence for major tech firms.

"The infrastructure will bring our pioneering tech solutions to enterprises and users in the nation, enhancing AI development and promoting progress nationwide," commented Alphabet's chief executive Sundar Pichai.

Project Details

An official contract to complete the initiative is scheduled for signing soon, state authorities confirmed.

"It is a significant advancement for our state's digital future, innovation, and global standing," said the technology official Nara Lokesh.

This initiative will integrate AI and cloud systems with sustainable power solutions and an broader fiber-optic system.

The State's Data Hub Strategy

The venture forms part of the local administration's plan to develop 6GW of computing facility capacity by 2029.

Data centres are physical facilities that contain the computer and network hardware that organizations use to collect, process, store, and distribute data.

They contain servers, storage systems and network equipment like routers and firewalls, combined with the necessary power and cooling systems to operate them.

Funding Benefits

In Andhra Pradesh, the government has been offering subsidised land and electricity to attract international investors.

Industry Growth

The nation's data center sector has developed swiftly in the recent half-decade, exceeding the one gigawatt capacity threshold in 2024 and almost increasing threefold its 2019 capacity.
