A courageous railway staff member who intervened to save travelers during a multiple stabbing incident on a high-speed train has sustained life-threatening injuries, police confirmed on Sunday.

Details of the Frightening Incident

Surveillance video reportedly depicts the staff member attempting to stop the assailant as the train traveled between a city and Huntingdon in the county. Bystanders recounted a terrifying 14-minute period after the train departed Peterborough, with injured passengers running through carriages.

The individual, a 32-year-old citizen from Peterborough, remains in detention for questioning. Police announced a major event on the 6:25 pm service from Peterborough to King's Cross in downtown London.

Crisis Response and Consequences

The event on Saturday night led to 11 people being treated in hospital after the train made an unscheduled stop at the station in Huntingdon. Several individuals have since been discharged from medical care.

A witness recorded the suspect brandishing a big knife and being subdued with a Taser as he faced police on the platform. He was reportedly heard shouting, "Kill me, kill me."

“This terrible incident has affected many people. We are thinking of the victims and their families – especially the courageous member of rail staff whose relatives are being supported by trained personnel,” stated a high-ranking law enforcement official.

Union Response and Appeals for Action

Rail unions were quick to commend staff and call for increased action. A union leader stated he would be “requesting immediate discussions with authorities, rail employers and police to ensure that we have the strongest available support, resources and robust procedures in operation”.

A different association representative encouraged the rail company and authorities “to move quickly to review safety, to support the affected workers, and to make sure that no incident like this happens again”.

Operator Commended for Rapid Thinking

The operator who halted the service at Huntingdon was described as being “deeply affected” but “well”, and has been praised by association officials for doing “exactly the right thing”.

“He did not stop the service in the center of two stations where it’s clearly challenging for the first responders to reach, but he carried on traveling until he arrived to Huntingdon, where the response was pretty much waiting,” stated a association representative.

Authorities said they received the initial emergency calls at 7:39 pm, and the service was compelled to make an unplanned stop in Huntingdon at 7:50 pm.

One witness described initially wondering if the situation was a Halloween joke, but quickly understood from people's faces that it was serious.

Authorities have confirmed there is no evidence to suggest the incident was a terror-related attack and have asked the community to provide with any further details.

Rail services on the affected route are expected to have delays until the following day, with travelers recommended to defer their journeys where possible.
