Debunking Venezuela Celebration Videos and AI Images of Maduro.
AI-generated graphics purporting to show Nicolás Maduro under arrest following his apprehension by the United States have gained tens of millions of impressions on social media.
How AI Images of Maduro Surfaced Soon After
The first inauthentic synthetic picture apparently displaying him taken off a plane surfaced a brief time later. The graphic was absent from any authoritative government accounts; rather, it was posted on the platform X by an account describing itself as an “enthusiast of AI-generated art”.
We’ve checked Google’s SynthID, which found the picture was produced or modified with AI tools.
Additional synthetic pictures started circulating in the subsequent period, appearing to show different views of Maduro detained. Noticeable identifying marks on these pictures reveal they originated from an Instagram profile called ultravfx.
AI analysis confirms all of these pictures were likewise created or altered generative models.
Authentic Image Released but Fakes Persisted
Donald Trump posted the initial authentic image of Maduro in handcuffs aboard the USS Iwo Jima on Saturday morning. Yet following this confirmation was released, AI-generated images continued to spread but were updated to include the gray sweatsuit worn by Maduro.
Online investigation show the new fake images were first posted on the video platform by a graphic design profile. Once again, SynthID confirms the new graphics were produced with generative artificial intelligence.
