Shoaib Bashir Makes Surprise Inclusion in England's Test Series Team
The English team has opted for a twelve-player selection just 48 hours ahead of the opening Test match, with the 22-year-old spinner securing a unexpected spot.
The 22-year-old’s inclusion suggests that the tourists will delay until the morning of the initial match to determine whether Perth Stadium conditions favor four seamers or the addition of a spin bowler.
Both pace bowlers are included in the 12-man group, indicating there are no doubts about their fast bowler's condition.
The other seamers round out the attack, with Carse expected to be omitted if Bashir enters the final team.
Ground Conditions Lean Toward Pace Bowlers
Brendon McCullum had been anticipated to opt for an all-seam attack on a venue that has staged five previous Tests.
During these matches, 134 wickets have fallen to pace bowling, with only 40 to spin bowling.
Of those 40 wickets, Australia’s Nathan Lyon has claimed the bulk, while all visiting spinners combined have only eight.
At a venue known for its pace and bounce, and whose groundsman, the pitch preparer, pledged that these characteristics are “permanent and not going to change,” a side loaded with fast bowlers remains the probable choice.
Alternative Choices Considered
There had been speculation that Will Jacks could be parachuted into the team to offer some spin while additionally strengthening the lower order.
However McCullum has chosen to stick with Bashir, having stated previously that he would be his first-choice slow bowler for the Ashes.
Earlier, Lyon commented on the English spinner as “OK,” adding that “from my perspective, Jack Leach is still England’s best spinner.”
“It is a huge responsibility, and it can be a massive challenge for people who haven’t done it in the previous in these conditions,” he remarked of slow bowling in Australian Tests.
“I won't reveal my strategies so they perform and perform well out here.”
