Significant Internet Disruption Impacts Many Websites and Applications

A large-scale internet outage has disrupted dozens online platforms and apps around the world, as users experiencing problems accessing the internet following issues at Amazon’s cloud computing platform.

The affected apps include Snapchat, the gaming platform Roblox, Signal, and Duolingo, in addition to several Amazon-owned services like its primary shopping site and the Ring doorbell company.

Across the United Kingdom, the financial institution Lloyds was disrupted along with its subsidiaries Halifax and Bank of Scotland, while there were also reports of issues accessing the the tax authority online portal on that morning. Also in the UK, multiple Ring device owners took to social media to complain their doorbells were not working.

Solely in the United Kingdom, notifications of disruptions on particular platforms totaled the tens of thousands for each app.

Amazon reported that the issue started in the east coast of the US at AWS, a section that offers essential online backbone for many companies, who lease capacity on the company's servers. The cloud platform is the world’s largest web hosting service.
