The Hamilton Island Resort, a Iconic Tropical Holiday Destination on the World Heritage Reef, Reportedly Sold by US Investment Giant.
A major tropical holiday destination situated within the Great Barrier Reef has entered into an agreement for sale to a US-based investment group for a sum said to be worth 1.2 billion Australian dollars.
“It is an honor to build on the legacy and commitment of the Oatley family has established in the heart of the iconic Great Barrier Reef,” said a company executive.
Details of the Sale
Headquartered in New York, Blackstone – which also owns the casino-hotel chain Crown Resorts – announced it had signed an deal to purchase the island resort from the Oatley family owners, pending customary regulatory approvals.
The sellers released a statement noting they welcomed the change in ownership of an island that holds a “special place in the affections of many Australians” and is known as “Australia’s Tropical Island”.
The Island's Scale and Features
Located roughly 900 kilometers north of Brisbane and about 500km south of Cairns, Hamilton spans more than 1,130 hectares spanning two separate islands.
Roughly thirty percent of the area is built upon, including a significant range of amenities:
- Five hotels
- Over twenty restaurants and bars
- 20 retail outlets
- An 18-hole championship golf course on neighboring Dent Island
- A marina and a commercial airport
Hamilton Island is noted as a significant employer in the Whitsunday region, sustaining a sizable resident community and staff, as well as a wide network of local partners, suppliers, and area businesses.
A Look Back at The Island's History
The late billionaire Robert Oatley, a renowned sailor and vintner, originally purchased the resort for A$200 million in the year 2003 after spotting the island from aboard a yacht during a voyage through the Whitsundays.
Hamilton's major development phase first began in the 1980s. In the decades before that, it was characterized by galvanised iron huts and more humble quarters that hosted domestic holidaymakers from inland areas and southern states.

Blackstone has ownership of luxury hotels and resorts in multiple nations, including Japan, India, the Maldives, Sri Lanka, and the United States.
The area is the ancestral territory of the Ngaro Indigenous people. The name comes from Captain James Cook, who sailed the HMS Endeavour through the island group on Sunday 3 June 1770, which was the Christian holiday of Whit Sunday.
